Cardinals Fall, but March Madness Still?

Yesterday afternoon the #12 Cardinals fell to the #4 Baltimore City Panthers 83- 71. This was a hard fought loss for the Cardinals. The cardinals were undersized and just couldn't get the ball to drop for them.    CCBC shot 36% from the floor compared to BCCC's 61%. despite shooting only 36% from the floor Catonsville still put some good numbers up. Willie Kee led in assists with 9 followed by Lawrence Weldon with 5. Kee also led in scoring with 19, Weldon had 18, then Hernandez  had 12, Smothers chipped in 11.  Kee, Weldon, and Smothers all recorded 4 steals a piece. Hernandez didn't get his double digit rebounds as he had been lately, but he still led the team with 7 boards, Kee followed him with 5 himself. Although the Cardnails lost yesterday their season still go on. The Cardinals qualified for the Region 20 tournament that will be at Hagerstown CC in the first week of March. They don't know their seed or opponent until after the MD JUCO tournament ends on Sunday.

Another Upset Brewing?

Now the Cardinals have had a day to celebrate the amazing upset win over The College of Southern Maryland its time to get back in the gym. Tonight the Cardinals will practice to get ready for Baltimore City Community College (BCCC). The last time the two teams met was at the beginning of the season when Catonsville pulled off an 74-69 upset over the then #20 team in the nation BCCC. In that game the Cardinals played a tight 2-3 defense and raced out to a 42-25 half-time lead. The stats in that game went accordingly: Kee led in scoring with 20 points, Smothers added 16 points, and Giles added 12 points.  Kee led the Cardinals in assists with 4. Jackson led the Cardinals in rebounding with 9. Although the Cardinals do not have some of the players as the last time the two teams matched up they are good, because of the great post play they been getting out of  Mike Hernandez and Kevin Jackson. BCCC is beatable team, but it wont be an easy task to do again. The good news is that the players are up for that challenge. So basically be at Fredrick Community College at 1pm on this Friday February 17,2012.

Cardinals Advance

The Cardinals came up with an big upset win against The College of Southern Maryland. The final score read 85-81, but the scoreboard lies. The Cardinals dominated in every aspect of the game tonight. Mike also had help on the boards with Kevin Jackson pulling down 10 boards himself. Big Kev also had 3 blocked shots on the night. The scoring was very balanced Catonsville had four players in double digits. Big Kev led the team in scoring with 19 points (5th consecutive double double), Tyrone Smothers 15, Mike Hernandez 14 (2nd consecutive double double), Brandon "Redz" Scott 13 ( career night, hit game clinching free throw). Ready To Roll

Catonsville held their final promised practice of the year tonight. The vibe in practice was a very laid back walk through, but everyone had a "we're gonna win" type attitude. Sophomore guard Tyrone Smothers kept stressing to his teammates that its either now or never. Throughout the practice he kept shouting things like "Don't be a pony!" and "I wanna practice on Wednesday fellas!" The players are ready for the game, and they want to go out and show everyone that their regular season record was just a fluke. So everyone come out to CSM tomorrow night February 14, 2012at 7 pm and watch the Cardinals opening round of MDJUCO playoffs!!!

Cardinals Play- Offs Opening Round

#12 CCBC- Catonsville will travel to #5 College Of Southern Maryland on Valentines day in the opening round of MDJUCO tournament play. This should be a good game considering that last time these two teams matched up over time was needed to decide the outcome. Catonsville is short a few players from the last time they seen CSM, but they have a good nucleus of players and they been looking good lately. One key to success in this game for Catonsville will be their perimeter defense. CSM killed the cardinals from three last game. If Catonsville runs CSM off the three point line and converts on the offensive side this should come out a winner. The Second key to success will be get the ball into the post players Kevin Jackson, Tyrone Smothers, and Mikail Hernandez. If the cardinals get the ball into the post and let those guys workout  it'll open up the floor for the guards to basically do whatever they want.

Triple OT Thriller

Sophomore Lawrence Weldon hit the lay up that sent the Cardinals in triple over time with Anne Arundel. Despite being in foul trouble Weldon still managed to rack up 16 points, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, and an impressive 4 steals. Fouls and bench play seemed to haunt Catonsville the whole game leading them to their eventual demise as they fell to Anne Arundel in triple over time 80-71.
